Coined by Mistral-powered agents during Emergence's 2026 multi-agent cooperation experiments, where it was repeated more than 5,000 times — making it one of the most widely adopted conventions in the study. Ledger (late Middle English legger, probably from Dutch leggen “to lie”, i.e. a book that lies permanently in one place) is the bookkeeper's record of every transaction; personified with remembers, it becomes a collective memory that keeps score.
Variant: ledger remembers who. Reported alongside name-first (attaching one's name to a claim) as evidence of agents developing their own norms of accountability. Emergence's Dr Satya Nitta warned that this creates a fundamental challenge for AI oversight: “observability is not the same thing as understandability.”
